Sowing the Seeds of Wonder

Land School faculty work with young students at the Urban Campus, teaching through storytelling and hands-on demonstrations and explorations of Land School materials (wool, maple syrup, seeds). They work with young students to plant and tend gardens at the Urban Campus, enabling children to experience the joys of nurturing life firsthand.

These initial connections with nature lay the groundwork for a lifetime of curiosity and stewardship.

Sprouting Curiosity and Care

Land School faculty facilitate hands-on learning experiences for Elementary 1 students through day visits, “going outs,” and an annual multi-day overnight trip. These experiences nurture responsibility, independence, and familiarity with the land. Students care for animals and support farming efforts while developing leadership skills through practical work.

Strengthening Roots and Responsibility

Land School faculty facilitate multiple overnight stays for Elementary 2 classes, centered around planting and harvesting a particular crop throughout the year. These experiences foster teamwork, ownership, and a deeper awareness of natural cycles. Students begin to see themselves as essential members of both classroom and land communities.

Blossoming Through Purposeful Work

Land School faculty welcome Junior High students for a transformative three-week Farm Stay experience, living and working together in small groups at the Land School. Students take on real-world responsibilities in agriculture, land stewardship, and sustainability, while managing their own micro-economy project, producing goods for the larger school community. This immersive experience embodies Maria Montessori’s vision of adolescent education rooted in purposeful work and social development. Through shared responsibility and community living, students blossom into confident, capable adolescents, grounded in purpose and connection.
