Montessori Education

Peace education teaches children the practical skills of empathy, conflict resolution, and respect for others— treating peace not as an abstract idea, but as a set of skills to practice daily. Through Grace and Courtesy lessons, community meetings, collaborative work, and guided conflict resolution, students learn to listen, communicate their needs, and find fair solutions together. The culture of the classroom is built over time, rooted in cooperation and a respect for differences.

Montessori education operates on the belief that all children possess an innate drive to learn. Children learn through their own experiences and at their own pace, guided by adult's careful observations of their interests, needs, and developmental readiness.

Dr. Montessori believed that children learn best when engaged in materials that follow their natural curiosity. She said, “If you follow the child, they will show you what they need to do.”

A common principle in Montessori classrooms is the balance of the child’s independence and freedom of choice with the necessary limits and structure. Children are free to choose their own work, move about the room, and work at their own pace. This freedom exists within clear limits and expectations to ensure respect for the environment, materials, and other children. When boundaries are consistently and respectfully maintained, children feel safe and secure as they develop self-discipline and responsibility.

Dr. Montessori observed that development occurs through a series of distinct stages — The Planes of Development — where children move through clear and observable phases of human development. Each phase has unique needs, characteristics, and predispositions for acquiring new skills. Our multi-age environments are prepared to meet children at each stage of development.

Montessori classrooms group children across a three-year age range, reflecting real-world experiences in which people of various ages learn and work together. The community cultivates a culture of respect where helping one another is joyful and collaborative. In the mixed-age community, students learn to become responsible caretakers of themselves, others, and the environment.

Dr. Montessori believed that environments should be prepared with physical and psychological conditions tailored to the needs of children at each stage of development. The prepared environment prioritizes beauty, order, and simplicity and serves the child by activating their curiosity for learning.
