Upper Elementary
Grades 4-6
More Independence, Collaboration, and Emotional Intelligence
In the upper elementary Montessori classroom, known internally as Elementary 2 or E2, students experience a significant increase in independence as they take on greater responsibility for their own learning. The prepared environment is meticulously designed to support self-directed exploration and deep engagement with complex concepts. Children choose their own work, set personal goals, and manage their time effectively, developing strong executive functioning skills. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and project-based, allowing students to delve deeply into subjects that spark their curiosity. They conduct independent research, participate in long-term projects, and present their findings to peers, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their work.
Collaboration is a key element at this level, as students often work together on group projects that require cooperation, negotiation, and shared problem-solving. The mixed-age classroom encourages mentorship, with older students guiding younger ones, which reinforces their own understanding and builds leadership skills. This collaborative atmosphere nurtures a strong sense of community, social-emotional fluency, and mutual respect. The depth of understanding achieved in the upper elementary program is profound, as students are encouraged to think critically, ask questions, and make connections across different areas of study. This holistic approach ensures that children not only acquire knowledge but also develop the ability to apply it creatively and thoughtfully in real-world contexts.
