The Lake Country Land School includes a Community Garden. Herbs, vegetables, and flowers are grown on three acres of land using sustainable farming practices. Lake Country students and families gain hands-on knowledge of these practices as they participate in the planting, care, and harvest of the crops. The produce is made available through the Garden Steward Program, which is described below. There is also a weekly market stand at Lake Country School in the fall when produce is available.

All Lake Country families are encouraged to come throughout the season to experience the joy of working in the gardens and being on the land.

What is a Garden Steward?

Like members of other CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), Garden Stewards invest money and labor in the Land School’s community garden in exchange for fresh produce during our market season.

How do I become a Garden Steward?

Simply download and fill out the information on the sign-up form (PDF format, 44 KB) and return it to Lake Country School with your payment!

How much does it cost?

Why are the prices different for non-working vs. working shares?

The additional $70 paid by those who are unable to donate work time will be used to hire LCS student apprentices to help in the garden.

What do I receive?

You may select fresh, organic produce from a market stand. Each Garden Steward begins the season with $250 in credit, which can be spent when and as desired. In addition to vegetables, beautiful cut flowers are offered. You’ll also receive a weekly newsletter containing Land School news along with occasional tips and recipes for using your vegetables.

How do I pick up my produce?

Every week for 16 weeks (mid-July through the end of October), produce is available in the LCS parking lot Thursday afternoons between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

What if I have credit left over at the end of the season?

This credit is non-refundable and will go into the Land School General Fund.

What does “working” at the Land School entail?

We ask Garden Stewards to help out at the farm on at least two occasions during the garden season. Children are always welcome, but childcare is not provided.

On Saturday work days, you will help with various garden and farm projects in the morning into early afternoon. A pot-luck picnic and afternoon hike follow for those who can stay.

During the market season, help is needed with our Thursday harvests. You are asked to arrive as early as possible Thursday morning (aim for 9 a.m.) and work until a pot-luck picnic in the early afternoon.

If you would like to buy a working share but are unable to participate in physical labor, please indicate this on the sign-up form. There are other ways you can help!

You are welcome to extend your time at the Land School by camping overnight before or after your work on the farm. We have great trails for hiking and lots of nature to explore. See our Summer Programs page for other summer opportunities at the Land School.
