Auction 2010
Tips for Successful Solicitation
by Tanya Johnson
- Solicit businesses on weekdays between early morning and mid-day (avoid busy times)
- Give the business an idea of what would make a great donation (this is where the pie in the sky ideas are very helpful)
- Inform the business manager what's in it for them like:
- auction catalog and emails-will go to hundreds of homes
- will be on the auction website for a minimum of six weeks
- will have a link to their website so interested bidders can click through to view their merchandise, menus, etc.
- access to and appreciation of our great community of parents and friends
- Once they agree, suggest they be as generous as possible or ask for two of what they offer (this has been very successful for me!)
The other thing that I learned is to minimize (unless you start early) calling on bigger chains. You typically need to go through corporate headquarters, a long process.
Personal contact is the best way to approach prospective donors. Most of us do not like to "cold call," but you’ll be surprised to discover how many contacts you have without realizing it. Remember how many times you have been asked to contribute, buy a raffle ticket or make a donation. Think about:
- family members and their occupations
- colleagues at work and their hobbies or associations
- businesses you frequent
Always have auction donation forms and business letters (available online and at the front desk and Development Office) with you. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what an enjoyable experience soliciting for the Auction will be!
