Important Change Effective December 2011

In the fall of 2011 LCS began grouping calendar events into several sub-calendars, the intent being to reduce overcrowding in the calendar display and give users more control over which types of events they wanted to see. The response to this has been mixed: some people appreciated that events were grouped, while others said the grouping we had created was too confusing.

In response to your feedback, we have rearranged the sub-calendar groupings, which we hope will provide greater clarity. The new arrangement includes the following calendars:

The new sub-calendars are available for subscription and viewing immediately. Links for doing so are shown in the table below. When you subscribe to a new calendar with iCal, please remember to set it to automatically refresh once per day so that you will see any changes that have been made.

All of the old sub-calendars, with the exceptions of Extracurricular Events and Great Gatherings, have now been discontinued.

We apologize for any inconvenience, but hope you will find the new arrangement more user-friendly. If you have any questions or comments, please direct technical queries to Joyce Mitchell and content queries to Pat deLeon.

Overview

LCS calendars are published in iCal (.ics) format. This allows you either to subscribe to them or to view them as web pages. If you subscribe to them, you can view events from different calendars at the same time. (You can also temporarily hide individual calendars.) If you view them as web pages, you will only see one calendar at a time.

To subscribe to them, you need either a Mac computer with iCal, or a PC with a compatible program. You can also subscribe to them with Google Calendar on any computer – Mac or PC – with a web browser.

If you subscribe with iCal, you can also create your own calendars (e.g. for classroom or home) and see them on your own computer along with the school calendars. Unless you have a MobileMe account with Apple, the calendars you create will be viewable only on your own computer.

If you have a PC, Google calendar may be the easiest way to subscribe to the school calendars. Additionally, whether you have a Mac or a PC, you can use Google Calendar to create your own calendars that you can access from any computer connected to the Internet, as well as share them with other people.

How to Subscribe to Calendars Using iCal (Mac Computers Only)

  1. In the table above, click on the "subscribe" corresponding to the calendar you want to subscribe to.
  2. iCal should open automatically and display a dialog box with a Subscribe button.
  3. In iCal, BEFORE you click on the Subscribe button, check the box next to Refresh to ensure that you get any updates that are made to the calendar. (If you forget to do this, you can change the setting later.) You should set the refresh interval to be daily (or no more frequently than hourly).
  4. Click on Subscribe.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 for all other calendars you want to subscribe to.
  6. Note: you cannot make any changes to calendars you subscribe to.

How to Subscribe to Calendars Using Google Calendar (Mac or PC)

  1. Sign in to your Google Calendar account. If you don't already have one, you can create one for free at www.google.com/calendar.
  2. In the "classic look" click on Add below the list of calendars, and select ADD by URL. If you don't see that, you are probably using the "new look" – in which case you should click on the little arrow to the right of where it says "Other calendars" – one of your options will be "Add by URL".
  3. Copy and paste (or type) the URL (see table above) for the desired calendar.
  4. Click Add.

Viewing Calendars as Web Pages

Click on any of the links in the table above to view the calendar, which will open in a new window. You can choose between day, week, or month view.

Click on any event for further information. Some days have more events than can be shown in month view, in which case a "+" sign will appear in the lower right corner of the day. Clicking on the + will switch you to day view in which all the events for the day can be seen.
